Wes Welker is wearing what appears to be a supersized helmet for the Denver Broncos-San Diego Chargers playoff game to help protect his melon.
Welker suffered a concussion in Week 14 against the Tennessee Titans and missed the team’s final three games of the regular season. He’s been medically cleared to come back since the playoffs began and practice all week for Sunday’s game, so he’ll be getting his second crack at the Chargers this season.
His oversized helmet — however funky it may have looked — is a good idea for protection. It also reminded many sports fans of the ginormous helmet David Wright once wore after he got hit in the head with a pitch:
