John Daly predicted Danny Willett would win Masters

John-Daly-sunflower-pants

Say what you will about John Daly, but the man knows his golf. How many people do you know who predicted 28-year-old Danny Willett would win the 2016 Masters?

During an appearance on “The Dan Patrick Show” last week, Willett was the first name Daly mentioned when he was asked who he thought would take home the green jacket this year.

“My dark horse this week is Danny Willett,” Daly said. “I still think you’re gonna see the cream of the crop. I still think you’re gonna see Jason Day — I never count Phil Mickelson out, I never count Bubba (Watson) out. Watch out for guys like Scott Piercy and Danny Willett. They both play really good on fast, fast greens.”

Prior to Sunday, Willett had not won a tournament on the PGA Tour. He had five wins on the European Tour and had been playing well this season, but he was hardly the favorite at Augusta National. If you read the story about Willett almost missing the Masters because of the birth of his first child, you would have been even less likely to pick him.

Perhaps Daly should be considered for the role of Ryder Cup captain. He may be one of the most controversial golfers in the sport’s history, but he clearly recognizes game.
