Scottie Scheffler announced his presence in the FedEx Cup Playoffs with authority Friday, firing a 9-under 61 to seize a three-stroke lead at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

The world No. 1 birdied his first five holes at TPC Southwind and finished with 11 birdies against two bogeys in sweltering 100-degree heat. Scheffler’s round tied the course record and left him at 11-under 129 after 36 holes. He began the day six shots off the pace before surging clear of the field.

“Really just a dream start,” Scheffler said, via ESPN. “Probably one of the best starts I’ve had on tour, to be honest with you. I couldn’t tell you a time where I’ve been lower early in the round.”

Viktor Hovland (64) and Sungjae Im (66) sat tied for second at 8 under. Ludvig Aberg was alone in fourth after a 65, one shot further back. Jordan Spieth carded a 69 to reach 6 under, while Rory McIlroy, paired with Scheffler the first two days, struggled to 4 over.

Scheffler has yet to win at TPC Southwind despite seven previous starts, the most of any course without a victory on his resume. He has not claimed a title since The American Express in January and entered the week with a substantial FedEx Cup points lead.

“The tournament is halfway over,” Scheffler said. “I had two good rounds to start and hopefully continue that over the weekend.”

Scheffler’s birdie try on the final hole came up inches short of a new course record, yet the round still positioned him firmly atop the leaderboard.
