Richards signed a 12-year contract extension in 2007 so it’s no surprise he was shocked by the deal like the rest of us. Philly didn’t just deal Richards — they went Las Vegas casino on us and just blew up the whole thing. They traded Jeff Carter to Columbus later in the day in order to make room for the Ilya Bryzgalov contract.
I know the Flyers were disappointed they were swept by Boston in the playoffs and that Richards has had a contentious relationship with the media in Philly, but this team was good. Why blow it all up? Sure they needed goaltending help, but after getting rid of Richards and Carter, are they even better? I highly doubt it.
