Panthers have goal taken away during Game 6 after review

Panthers center Carter Verhaeghe toeing the offside line during Game 6 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final

The Florida Panthers had what they thought was their first goal Friday during Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final at Rogers Place in Alberta, Canada, but it was wiped away upon a review.

The Edmonton Oilers started the second period with an Adam Henrique goal to build a 2-0 lead. Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov answered right back with a goal of his own just seconds later.

But the 2-1 score wouldn’t stand for long. Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch successfully challenged Barkov’s goal, which was eventually wiped away due to an offside call.

Oilers fans erupted in applause after the goal was overturned. Panthers coach Paul Maurice had the opposite reaction, giving the referees an earful for their decision.

Edmonton winger Zach Hyman buried the Panthers in an even deeper hole to close out the second period. Hyman slipped the puck past Sergei Bobrovsky to give the Oilers a 3-0 lead.

Only one team in NHL history — the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs — has ever come back from down 3-0 in a 7-game series. The Panthers are hoping to avoid being on the wrong side of history.
