A 54-year old woman from Atlanta got so wrapped up in her role as an Olympic torchbearer that she decided to get a tattoo to celebrate it. She should have gone to a different artist. Jerri Peterson intended to get a tattoo of an Olympic torch with the Olympic logo, the words “Olympic Torch Bearer” above the logo and “London” below it. She got most of what she asked for with only one minor issue — “Olympic” was spelled “Oylmpic.” Woops.
“I always wanted to have a tattoo but I never quite felt passionate about any one thing to have it put on my body permanently,” she told the BBC. “So when I was selected for this wonderful honor, I thought ‘that’s it – I’m ready to have my tattoo.”
When Peterson felt ready, she says she booked an appointment with a “really good” tattoo artist in Georgia. She said the artist “felt so bad” when she informed them of the mistake and offered to correct it, but Peterson has chosen to leave it as is.
“I looked at it and I was so disappointed,” she explained. “I called my husband and he giggled a little bit. (The artist) wanted to fix it, but I decided I want to keep it. It’s fine. It’s the Oy-limpics — it’s as unique as I am.”
Tattoos hurt. I wouldn’t want to go back under the gun, either. We’ve seen grammatical errors in tattoos before that are the result of a brain lapse, but this is just a straight up spelling mistake. One thing’s for sure: there will never be another tattoo like it.
