Carlos Alcaraz makes big claim about his French Open win

Carlos Alcaraz made a big claim on Sunday after coming back to beat Jannik Sinner to win the French Open at Roland Garros in Paris. Alcaraz dropped the first two sets of the match and was even down triple-championship point in the fourth set before battling back to win it 4-6, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2).

During a post-match interview with TNT, Alcaraz was asked by Jim Courier where this match ranks in his grand slam career. Alcaraz declared it his best match.

“I’m going to put it the first one,” Alcaraz said. “I think this is the first match that I came back from two sets to love down. I think it was in a better location – the Roland Garros final against the No. 1 of the world — Jannik. I think it was the perfect location to come back from two sets to love down. I think it is the best match that I’ve played in grand slam history in my career. So the best grand slam match in my career. I’m really proud and happy that this happened.”

True indeed — Alcaraz had been 0-8 in his career when down two sets at majors. So not only did he make this his first career comeback from down two sets, but he did it against the No. 1 player, coming back from down triple-championship point, and to win the championship. That’s as good as it gets.

The betting odds show just how ridiculous Alcaraz’s comeback against Sinner was. Alcaraz has now won five career major singles titles, including consecutive French Opens. Sinner has won three career majors. The two stars have combined to win each of the last six majors.
