Jannik Sinner came so close to beating Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open final on Sunday that sportsbooks viewed him as a sure thing to win at one point in the match.

Sinner, the top seed in the men’s singles draw at the French Open, lost to two-seed Alcaraz 4-6, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2) in a thrilling match at Roland Garros in Paris. Sinner was up 5-3 in the fourth set and leading 40-0, but Alcaraz battled back to extend the match. Sinner was unable to close Alcaraz out despite having triple-championship point.

If you want to know how close Sinner was to winning his first French Open, look no further than the live gambling odds. When Sinner had triple-championship point, DraftKings listed his live odds to win the match at -50000.

Alcaraz’s live odds to win were +6500 at around the same time in the match.

What those odds mean is that someone who wanted to bet on Sinner to win at that point in the match would have had to risk $500 for the chance to win $1. A $10 bet on Alcaraz would have returned $650.

Sinner has struggled throughout his career in matches that last more than four hours. He is now 0-6 in that scenario. That appeared to be the tipping point for him on Sunday, as Sinner had his big lead in the fourth set at around three hours and forty-five minutes into the match. Sinner still managed to force a tiebreaker in the final set, but he fell apart and lost 10-2 with Alcaraz making some incredible shots.

While Sinner definitely blew the match, it was equally impressive that Alcaraz was able to continue executing shots when it looked like he had no chance of winning. The odds reflect just how remarkable the comeback was.
