David Ross, Jonny Gomes likely to follow Lester to Cubs

Jon Lester choosing to sign with the Chicago Cubs could have a domino effect.

Some believe that Lester agreeing to a deal with the Cubs means free agents David Ross and Jonny Gomes could follow. Yahoo’s Jeff Passan said the chances the two sign with the Cubs “increases significantly.” ESPN’s Buster Olney also believes Ross will sign with the Cubs.

Ross is a veteran catcher who worked with Lester on the Red Sox in 2008 and from 2013-2014. Though he hasn’t hit well the past two season, Ross has some pop and carries a lifetime OPS of .753.

Gomes is an additional outfielder who was part of the Red Sox 2013 World Series team. He also spent significant time early in his career with the Tampa Bay Rays under Joe Maddon.

In addition to Ross and Gomes, recall that Jake Peavy said he wanted to sign with Lester as a package deal. The Cubs could probably add him for a good price if they want.
