Red Sox bolster starting rotation with addition of Nathan Eovaldi

Nathan Eovaldi

The Boston Red Sox made a move to bolster their starting rotation on Wednesday when they acquired right-hander Nathan Eovaldi from the Tampa Bay Rays.

In exchange, the Rays landed left-handed minor league pitcher Jalen Beeks.

Boston’s biggest need heading into the trade deadline is bullpen help, but the addition of Eovaldi should help solidify the back of their rotation, which has been questionable as of late. Drew Pomeranz made his first start since May 31 on Tuesday night, and he allowed four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings against the Baltimore Orioles. Eduardo Rodriguez has been on the disabled list with a foot injury, so the Red Sox have been scrounging a bit to put together quality starts behind Chris Sale, David Price and Rick Porcello.

While his numbers aren’t eye-popping, Eovaldi is a hard thrower who has experience in the AL East. He’s 3-4 with a 4.26 ERA this season, and he spent the 2015 and 2016 seasons with the New York Yankees.
