Richie Sexson: Feast or Famine

May 9, 2007 by Larry Brown • Comments

Watching the Mariners play the Tigers yesterday, it became pretty clear to me. Not unlike the Rob Deers and Cecil Fielders before him, Richie Sexson is the ultimate feast or famine batter in today’s game. Check it out — Sexy went 1 for 4, with a 3-run bomb, raising his batting average to .152. Here’s the breakdown this year for The Big Sexy

  • 15 hits in 99 at-bats
  • 5 Home Runs
  • 7 Doubles
  • 3 Singles

Are you kidding me? How can a big league first baseman take 100 at-bats and only get 3 singles? I just really don’t know what to make of this — is it good that he only hits for power, or bad that he can’t do anything other than go deep? I’m sure The Big Sexy will finish the year around .250, so I’m not too worried, but I couldn’t help but put up those stats while they existed, because I don’t believe it gets any more extreme than that.
