Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles behind home plate at Yankees opener

Two Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are seated behind home plate at the New York Yankees’ home opener, and believe it or not, there’s a perfectly good explanation for it.

Back in February, the Yankees eliminated the option to print tickets at home, making it substantially more difficult for tickets to be resold. The focus seemed to be on the Legends Suite, the section of seating directly behind home plate at Yankee Stadium. Yankees CEO Lonn Trost basically confirmed that the reason for the policy was to keep your average Joe who wasn’t used to sitting in the rich people seats from picking up tickets below face value and befouling the Legends seats – and the wealthy folks who paid full price for them – with their presence.

John Oliver, host of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight,” caught wind of this and battled it in his own way: namely, he picked up two tickets to each of the first three Yankees home games and offered them up for 25 cents. You can see video of the segment here. All you had to do was dress like someone who had never sat in a premium seat before, tweet a picture of your planned outfit using the hashtag #IHaveNeverSatInAPremiumLocation.

And thus, almost certainly as a result of this, at Tuesday’s home opener we have a pair of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles seated directly behind home plate.

Now we can’t wait to see what Oliver’s winners for Wednesday and Thursday came up with. Hopefully they have as much fun as this guy did at the NCAA Tournament.
