Dwight Howard to Shaq: Sit Down and Get On with Your Life

There is no athlete or former athlete in the world who loves attention more than Shaquille O’Neal.  Everything the four-time NBA champion does seems like it is for show.  Whether it’s writing an obnoxious book or announcing his retirement through an internet video as part of a business venture, Shaq is always up to something.

Over the past couple of years, one of Shaq’s favorite hobbies has been ragging on Dwight Howard.  It’s probably a combination of jealousy and Dwight being a punching bag that creates a solid amount of buzz, but Howard has grown understandably annoyed of hearing from Big Daddy Diesel.

“(Shaq should) just sit down and get on with his life,” Howard said Friday according to the Orlando Sentinel when asked about Shaq calling Andrew Bynum the NBA’s best center. “What’s the point of talking trash? He’s mad about Superman. I didn’t know he made it up. I didn’t know Superman came from Shaquille O’Neal.”

Howard also pointed out that it is Shaq’s job now as an analyst for TNT to get people “riled up.” As we know, Shaq doesn’t need to be a TNT analyst to do that.  In the past, O’Neal has complained about Howard never having to deal with double teams and voiced his opinion about the league having less competition now than it did when he played.

I’m not the biggest Howard fan, but I couldn’t have said it any better.  Shaq needs to get over the fact that Howard draws comparisons to him and move on with his life.  Then again, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.

I hope TNT cans his ass before too long.

Love Shaq, I like his perspective, but we all know that he is just being a baby here. Dwight is good, we all know that. Shaq is one of the best ever, we all know that too. Shaq’s insecurities are becoming painfully obvious when he just needs to leave Howard alone. There is nobody even close to Dwight in the league right now at the center position, saying Bynum is better is a joke and an insult at Howard’s skill.

Shaq is jealous of Howard? Shaq has 4 titles and in his prime was the greatest physical specimen in the history of the NBA.  Dwight will never ever come close to Shaq’s level, and yet Shaq only put in effort when he felt like it. He has nothing to be jealous of.

Shaq was so good because officials allowed him to bowl people over before shooting.  Seems like he and Brett Favre can’t handle losing the spotlight.

Shaq was the best, emphasis on “was”.  We all know that most current and former pro athletes are just little kids in huge bodies that crave attention.  There are many exceptions, but Shaq is the furthest example from that.  Favre is tied with Shaq.  I was excited when Shaq was in Phoenix, and as far as being on TNT, he’s like a larger Barkley.  Howard is awesome but has more weaknesses in his game compared to Shaq, but that’s only because Shaq is Shaq.  But Shaq giving Howard a rough time is just drama.  Anyone of us fans knows that Bynum is a good center when he isn’t injured which has been about 3 months.  Just kidding.  If he stays healthy this season, he will have good stats, but will the Lakers make the playoffs?  That’s what important.

I really don’t think Shaq dislikes Howard as much as he puts on. My thought is that Shaq is trying to inspire Howard to be the best center he is most capable of being. Sometime you can goad a person into maximizing their skills beyond what they themselves think. I further believe Shaq is pushing Howard to maturity in respect to being a complete player as it relates to his overall game, sharpening every phase of his game. Shaq knows that as great as he was, his game was weak when it came to foul shooting, the one thing that hurt him and his teams in clutch situations at times. Howard is a much better foul shooter , but lacks in other areas of his game. Areas that Shaq knows need vast improvement for howard to not only exceed him, but become a hall of fame player with all the tools that few big’s have ever processed. One of Howard’s glaring weakness is playing with his back to the basket, as well as a 10 to 12 foot jumper, and tweaking his passing ability, Shaq knows with these improvements, plus Howard’s possession of that 110% motor, Howard will have no peers capable of dealing with him on the court. From what I have seen and read of Shaq over the years, he is not a mean spirited person, he is a teddy bear, if he was not, there would be many very physically hurt retired Ex-NBA player who would have a hard time getting out of bed every morning!! People and the media talked about Shaq being a bully of a player because he used to drop his shoulder when going to the basket. I don’t blame him, just because he was as big as he is, does not mean he should have had to take the beatings to took over the years, and the Ref’s allowed it. Plus, no one player was as good at dropping that shoulder into you as Larry Bird was over the years, and no calls were made compared to the calls made against Shaq. Oh!; My bad, forgot about the double standard in the NBA.
