NBA Groupies Now Advertising in USA Today Sports Weekly
By Larry Brown April 22, 2010 - Posted in Basketball

Now that he’s recently retired, my Dad has a lot more time on his hands for sports reading so he just began subscribing to USA Today Sports Weekly (in addition to the existing SI, Sporting News, and Baseball Digest magazines, of course). When he gets done with the mags, he passes them on to me and they join my hearty collection of sports-related restroom reading. While flipping through the Sports Weekly from two weeks ago, I noticed the most curious add. Here I was thinking that NBA groupies had progressed to twitter but apparently I was wrong. Very wrong. Check out this personal ad appearing to the left of the sports crossword puzzle:

In case the fine print is too small to read, it says “Beautiful, Distinguished Female 44 seeks friendship, more” and then it passes along the phone number. Before you go off calling the number, let me spare you by saying it takes you to a voice mail of this supposed female and it will cost you an international fee if you’re calling from the U.S. (250 area code is British Columbia). I really don’t know who’s behind that ad nor if it’s legit. It certainly is pretty crazy. Not to mention a waste of money; the ad is assuming NBA players read USA Today Sports Weekly cover-to-cover. Bad assumption but I’m sure the folks in Clearwater, FL don’t at all mind.
