Bowling Green takes shot at Toledo over Shrek mascot campaign

Bowling Green is not a believer in Toledo’s supposed campaign to change their mascot to the legendary film icon, His Majesty Shrek.

In a post to Twitter on Tuesday, Toledo announced that they would make the animated ogre their new university mascot if they got 500,000 retweets. In response, Bowling Green, one of their rivals in the Mid-American Conference, tweeted a photo of their own mascots, the Falcons, and said that they would never sell out in exchange for retweets.

Alas though, the whole thing was actually a hoax. Toledo media relations specialist Christine Billau revealed shortly afterwards that the tweet, which has since been deleted, was just a joke and was not meant to be taken literally.

“We are definitely not changing the school mascot to Shrek,” Billau told Scott Gleeson of USA TODAY Sports. “The tweet was meant to be fun, but it caused too much of a distraction.”

So there you have it, our beloved green hero won’t have a future as the official mascot of a major university after all. Still though, Shrek will continue to live on in our hearts and in postgame press conferences for a long time to come.
