Reports: Aaron Hernandez feared being outed as gay
Reports have been circulating this week following the death of Aaron Hernandez that the former NFL player murdered one of his friends to cover up being outed as gay.
Newsweek reported on Friday that Hernandez murdered Odin Lloyd in 2013 because Lloyd had found out Hernandez was bisexual. They also say that one of the three suicide notes Hernandez left behind was for his prison boyfriend.
The Daily Mail reported the same about Hernandez’s note being written for a prison boyfriend, though other news reports said the note was for a lawyer.
These are not the first reports of Hernandez’s sexuality being in question, though it certainly comes from the most credible outlet yet.
New England journalist Michelle McPhee reported on “The Kirk & Callahan Show” that Hernandez had a relationship with a male friend from high school.
“There was a relationship with somebody from his high school years,” she said. “That may have provided –– and this was one of the investigative theories in the beginning –– because they got information from Ernest Wallace that perhaps –– and remember, Ernest Wallace was the guy who ditched the gun –– they had information from him that one of the motives is Odin Lloyd used a derogatory term for gay people in front of Aaron Hernandez and that Odin Lloyd had knowledge because of this relationship he had with the man in Connecticut.”
McPhee called the reports of Hernandez’s sexuality “common knowledge” for anyone who has dug for information on this story. Newsweek says Hernandez’s alleged high school boyfriend testified in front of a grand jury and was interviewed by authorities, which is what could make it “common knowledge.” Newsweek also reports that Wallace called Hernandez a “limpwrist” during a jail house visit.
Though this still does not explain why Hernandez committed suicide on Wednesday morning, days after being acquitted for double-murder, it does give some more background about his potential emotional struggle. Hernandez was serving a life sentence for the murder of Lloyd. For now, this legal theory is one reason that has been given for why he may have killed himself.
