Victor Wembanyama was back in New York over the weekend for Fanatics Fest, which meant he had to brave a horde of New York Knicks fans still riding high from Jalen Brunson and company’s incredible NBA Finals run.
After getting introduced on the stage, the Spurs star big man was met with cheers and some harmless trolling from fans.
“Knicks in five,” shouted some members of the crowd. (You can watch the video here.)
The two-time NBA All-Star either didn’t hear what was said or simply chose not to be bothered by it. After all, he had heard it all during the series against the Knicks and in its aftermath, as New York fans continue to revel in the franchise’s drought-ending championship.
The good news for Wembanyama is that he is still just 22 years old and should have several chances at winning an NBA championship. He has yet to reach his full potential, which is a scary thought not just for the Knicks but for the rest of the league, which is already having all sorts of trouble figuring out how to stop him, notwithstanding New York’s success in the Finals against the Spurs.
In his third NBA season, Wembanyama averaged 25.0 points on 51.2% shooting, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 blocks and 3.1 assists through 65 games, while also taking home the Defensive Player of the Year honor.
