Ex-Browns CEO Joe Banner critical of Brandon Weeden

Brandon Weeden

Former Cleveland Browns CEO Joe Banner essentially threw the equivalent of an “LOL” in the direction of the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

Banner heard somewhere that the Cowboys were confident in quarterback Brandon Weeden’s ability to succeed against a team that blitzes a lot the way the Arizona Cardinals do. Banner sent this tweet Sunday morning, prior to the Cardinals-Cowboys game:

Cowboys confident in Weeden vs team that blitz's a lot. If they are right, they know something that will shock me.

— Joe Banner (@JoeBanner13) November 2, 2014

Banner was right on. Weeden went just 18/33 for 183 yards and two interceptions. He added in a garbage-time touchdown pass in the Cowboys’ 28-17 loss to the Cardinals.

The manner in which Banner criticized Weeden was funny; you just don’t see NFL executives throw around that sort of criticism of a player over Twitter. But it’s not like Banner was wrong. Banner did not draft Weeden — the previous regime took the former Oklahoma State quarterback in the first round months before Banner got his job as CEO. Banner’s regime brought in some competition for Weeden, and the team cut the QB earlier this year, not long after it was announced that Banner would not be back with the team.

I think everyone can see that Weeden is not very good, and certainly that he struggles against the blitz the way Banner said.
