Eric Weddle reportedly took less money to sign with Ravens

Veteran safety Eric Weddle had plenty of offers from teams when free agency began, and he reportedly did not choose the highest bidder.

According to Jason Cole of Bleacher Report, Weddle turned down more money from two other teams when he signed with the Baltimore Ravens. A lengthy conversation with assistant general manager Eric DeCosta apparently was enough to convince the three-time Pro Bowler.

Cole says DeCosta spent over an hour on the phone with Weddle, going over any concerns he had about choosing the best spot for his family and best situation to compete for a championship. DeCosta reportedly told Weddle that he has turned down eight other NFL job opportunities to stay with the Ravens, and that helped convince Weddle that Baltimore is a “first-class organization.”

Weddle signed a four-year, $26 million deal that includes $13 million guaranteed, so it’s not as if he will go hungry. But given the lousy way that his tenure with the San Diego Chargers ended, it’s no surprise stability was so important for him in his next venture.
