The amount of irony that has surfaced in the wake of Geno Smith having his jaw broken by a teammate on Tuesday is incredible. It exists even on Smith’s own Instagram page.
Roughly a week ago, Smith posted the photo you see above with the following caption:
“Through the wire.”
Now that his jaw has reportedly been broken in two places and will require surgery, some have wondered if Smith will need a wire in his mouth to help him heal. In fact, fellow West Virginia alum Pat White joked about it shortly after Smith’s fight with I.K. Enemkpali, complete with a reference to the Kanye West song.

Folks have not been kind to Smith, who is expected to miss at least two months. Between the shots from people like White and the endless Twitter memes, the Jets quarterback truly is dealing with insult on top of injury.
