Jay Cutler ‘felt bad’ for Jason Campbell

Jay Cutler missed Monday night’s Bears-49ers game because he was recovering from a concussion, and backup quarterback Jason Campbell struggled in his place.

Campbell was sacked six times and pressured 11 times during the 32-7 loss. He went 14/22 for 107 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions in the loss, and his offensive line hardly afforded him a chance to compete against the aggressive San Francisco defense. Cutler empathized with Campbell.

“I felt bad for the guy. It’s a hard situation to be in,” Cutler said on ESPN 1000 Tuesday. “I think backup quarterback is one of the best jobs and one of the worst jobs. It’s a tough, tough gig, whenever the guy [the starter] goes down.

“Especially a veteran like him. He’s expected to perform at a high level. But I don’t think [the offense] gave him a fair shot.”

The offense most certainly did not give him a fair shot. 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was in the backfield all game and racked up 5.5 sacks. This is the same type of performance from the Bears line that we have seen with Cutler at QB. Cutler has managed to tap dance around the pressure he feels, but Campbell was unable to.

With the exception of Niners fans, I figure most people would have felt badly for Campbell after watching that disaster.
