Redskins will let Josh Norman shadow No. 1 receivers

Josh Norman

The Washington Redskins will be putting cornerback Josh Norman on the opponent’s star receiver in 2017.

Defensive coordinator Greg Manusky confirmed that Norman would have more freedom to shadow opposing No. 1 receivers after the tactic was shunned at times by former defensive coordinator Joe Barry.

“It’s hard for them to travel at times, but will we do that? Yeah,” Manusky said, via John Keim of ESPN.

Manusky said comfort level would be a big factor in determining how often it happens.

“Some guys always play on the right side or on the left side,” Manusky said. “They feel comfortable, and then all of the sudden, if you take that guy — certain players — and move them to the other side, it’s kind of foreign for them. From my standpoint, even from a linebacker’s perspective, I’d rather have been on the right than on the left.”

Washington was criticized for failing to shadow with Norman at times, particularly against Antonio Brown. That apparently won’t be happening as much in 2017.
