Richie Incognito talked about shooting black people, Jeff Ireland
There are so many notable angles to emerge from the Ted Wells report on the Richie Incognito-Jonathan Martin bullying investigation. We’ve covered many of them already, but another one is how Incognito and another Miami Dolphins player texted about shooting black people and former Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland during conversations about guns. You can read about it in the text message exchanges shown below:
Though the investigation and reasonable people would recognize they’re just joking, it’s nonetheless disturbing to read that those are thoughts they had and joked about. The investigation concluded that despite those being jokes, a lot of it was rooted in deep-seated racism, which is how I view it.
In the end, Incognito definitely comes across to me as a crazy guy who is a good football player, sometimes endearing teammate, but crosses the line way too frequently and doesn’t know when to stop. He creates a bad environment for a lot of the people around him, and he’s certainly not the kind of disturbing force I’d want on my team. Martin also seemed to accurately evaluate himself when he said he’s a pushover and recognized that it is not in his nature to fight back with words or physical force. That’s probably why the tormenting of him never stopped.
