Tommy Kelly on Matt Schaub: ‘Old Boy Choked, Simple as That’

When the Raiders defeated the Texans in Houston on Sunday, it was no secret the end result was more than just a win. Players and coaches were no doubt mourning the loss of their late owner, Al Davis, and were able to cash in on the “win one for Al” mentality. Aside from the emotional aspect of the victory, Oakland also proved it is capable of winning an important game on the road.

Enter defensive tackle Tommy Kelly, who decided to make the win a little less graceful with his comments about Matt Schaub after the game.

“Old boy choked,” Kelly said while laughing according to the Houston Chronicle via CBSSports.com’s Eye on Football blog. “All he had to do was run it in. He choked, simple as that.”

As you probably know, Kelly is referring to the final play of the game during which it aappeared Schaub had a running lane from a few yards out but he tossed the ball right into the hands of Michael Huff.  That being said, defensive backs and linebackers tend to close on slow quarterbacks like Schaub pretty quickly, so it’s no guarantee he would have gotten in.

The poor throw is inexcusable, but Kelly should know better than to take credit away from his own team by ragging on the opponent.  Comments like those accomplish nothing.
