    Ted Williams missed almost FIVE seasons, Larry. Not only did he miss the three WW II seasons you are talking about, because he was a fighter pilot, he did a command performance in Korea, and lost almost two more. He also missed the second half of 1950 because he broke his elbow in the 1950 all star game. This is why people talk about Ted being the greatest hitter.

    There must be something about center fielders, because Willie Mays and Joe Di Maggio had two of the biggest egos I’ve ever witnessed in baseball. For instance, they both insisted on playing only center field long after their skills eroded.
