Moscow is running low on beer thanks to World Cup

Russia may have overlooked one vital issue in its World Cup planning — an adequate beer supply.

A number of Moscow restaurants and bars say they’re running low on beer as fans from across the world descend on the city to drink and celebrate.

A number of factors have historically ensured beer sales are on the low side in Russia, but the wave of soccer fans in the city caught some off-guard, and both providers and suppliers hadn’t really anticipated the spike in consumption.

“We just didn’t think they would only want beer,” said Moscow waiter told Reuters anonymously. “There are really a lot of people in Moscow … and they are all drinking. It’s hot, and it’s football.”

The waiter said his restaurant ran out of draft lager on Monday, and the problem is exacerbated by some suppliers also being stretched thin.

One Croatian fan named Ivan, however, thinks there’s not much of a problem.

“There is beer everywhere,” he said. “Some places yes, some places no. You just have to know where to find it!”

The bad news for Moscow is we’re barely a week into the World Cup, with over three more weeks of action left. Maybe they should put in an emergency call to the Golden State Warriors for some assistance.
