Just Brian McCann blocking the Mariano Rivera pitching change

Brian McCann Mariano Rivera

Brian McCann has cultivated a reputation for being the home run trot police, so someone thought it would be funny to Photoshop him into an image of the beautiful moment shared by Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte and Derek Jeter on Thursday night. Well done.

What do you think McCann would have complained about? That the change took too long? That the Yankees pulled Rivera an out early instead of letting him finish the game? That Joe Girardi should have come out for the change instead of Pettitte and Jeter? I’m sure at least one of the above would have upset him.

Here’s where the original McCann image came from.

Carlos Gomez sparks Brewers-Braves fight by pimping home run (Video)

Carlos Gomez sparked a major fight between the Milwaukee Brewers and Atlanta Braves on Wednesday after homering off Braves starter Paul Maholm in the top of the first inning.

Gomez admired his home run after crushing the ball to deep left center, leading Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman to yell at him as he passed by on his trot. You could also hear one Braves player, possibly McCann or Maholm, yell “f—ing run, g-d d—it.” More Braves yelled at Gomez, and catcher Brian McCann even confronted Gomez halfway up the third base line.

The benches cleared after McCann confronted Gomez, leading to a full-on fight. Yes, Gomez was ejected without even touching home plate. It looked like at least one punch was thrown during the incident.

Gomez actually has a history of being a jerk after home runs. Three years ago we posted about him pimping a home run with his team down 15-0. Maybe Gomez was pimping his home run because of a beef with Maholm; Maholm hit Gomez with a pitch in June and also hit him in 2010.

One thing we do know for certain is that the Braves really really dislike it when you pimp a home run against them.

Brian McCann poked in the eye during grand slam celebration (Video)

Players injuring themselves during celebrations is something that happens all too often. With baseball, these injuries tend to occur after a walk-off win. When 25 grown men are all waiting at home plate to beat the crap out of the guy who just delivered the game-winning hit, something bad like this is bound to happen. On Wednesday night, the Braves reminded us that injuries can happen during low-key celebrations as well when Brian McCann was poked in the eye after hitting a grand slam.

As you can see from the clip above, McCann and Michael Bourn completely whiffed on a high five and Bourn’s finger ended up right in McCann’s grill piece. While he will likely be fine, it is interesting to note that the Braves catcher has had eye issues throughout his career. He had laser eye surgery back in 2007 but his vision remained blurry, so he eventually went with glasses. He then had a second Lasik surgery in 2010 that restored his vision. Hopefully this doesn’t set him back at all.
