Southwestern Oklahoma State taking football helmets to next level

Southwestern Oklahoma State helmet

Southwestern Oklahoma State is a school I never had heard of until now. I’m guessing that’s exactly why they unveiled this crazy helmet.

The school started promoting this camoflauge helmet last week and began receiving attention for it. Unfortunately, the helmet is strictly a promotional item available in an auction, not one the team will wear on the field.

Still, it’s pretty crazy looking. It reminds me of something the now-defunct Long Beach Ice Dogs wore back in the day. And give yourself a sticker if you know who the Ice Dogs are.

Here are all the crazy football helmets we’ve featured over the past few years.

Indiana football gets crazy new helmets, players go nuts (Video)

Indiana football is the latest program to join the new uniform and helmet craze, and judging by the players’ reactions, the new helmets are a big hit.

Indiana new helmets

Indiana, which is an adidas school, unveiled five new football helmets they may wear during the season. According to IU athletics, head coach Kevin Wilson showed the new helmets to the team Sunday evening in the Henke Hall of Champions with the help of fifth-year senior safety Greg Heban and senior wide receiver Kofi Hughes. Wilson says the helmets will always include the traditional crimson color and IU logo.

Below is a closer look at each new helmet:

Baylor appears to be going the way of Oregon football. The program’s running backs coach, Jeff Lebby, tweeeted two photos on Saturday of new helmets for the football team. One is gold chrome, and the other is black matte. It’s believed these are helmets the team will wear in the upcoming season.

Virginia Tech will wear flat maroon helmets against Rutgers (Pictures)

When teams unveil new uniforms specifically for their bowl games, the results are usually hit or miss. We’ll file these Virginia Tech helmets under “miss.” If the Hokies were attempting to make their helmets as dull and boring as possible, they certainly accomplished that.

We’re not asking for someone to outdo these amazing Boise State helmets from earlier in the year, because that’s probably never going to happen. However, Virginia Tech could have put forth a little more effort than this. As Ty Duffy of The Big Lead pointed out, tickets for the Russell Athletic Bowl are selling for as low as $5 on StubHub. Perhaps the VT athletic department wanted to excitement over the helmets to match that of the actual game.

Rutgers to wear patriotic helmets to support US Armed Forces (Picture)

With an upcoming game against Army this weekend, Rutgers has decided to unveil patriotic helmets to show their support for the Armed Forces. We have seen a few teams across the nation like North Carolina do the same already this season, but the detail of the Rutgers helmets definitely gives them an edge.

In particular, I’m a huge fan of the distressed chrome look in addition to the “R” resembling an American flag.  While I wouldn’t go as far as to say the design is more aesthetically pleasing than the black Boise State helmets we showed you recently, the fact that Rutgers is showing support for the men and women who protect our country is certainly worth some bonus points.

The new helmet movement in college football continued on Saturday with four schools showing off new ones. Above are Boise State’s black helmets that were easily the slickest we saw. The Broncos wore them on Saturday for their 32-7 win over UNLV.

Notre Dame helmets for the Miami game were two-sided and ugly (Picture)

Notre Dame’s unique uniforms for the Oct. 6 game against Miami were unveiled in August, and at the time we called them hideous. After seeing them worn on the field, our reaction was no different.

These two-sided helmets looked fine if you were looking at the gold side, but the blue side with the leprechaun ruins it all. Not only are the helmets asymmetrical, but they’re also uneven; the blue side only covers the left third of the helmet, not half of it.

Even their gold shamrock helmets were slightly better.

Thanks to @CJZero for the excellent photo work.
