Jonathan Toews injured by huge hit from Brooks Orpik (Video)

Brooks-Orpik-levels-Jonathan-ToewsChicago Blackhawks nation is holding its collective breath after Jonathan Toews left Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins with what appeared to be an injured left arm. Toews, who has not missed a game this season, was the recipient of a massive hit from Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik in the second period.

Orpik lowered his shoulder and leveled Toews with what appeared to be a clean hit. Some have argued that Orpik, a known big hitter, targeted the head area, but he lowered his shoulder and did not lead with his elbow. Toews skated off under his own power but did not return to the game.

Orpik is not expected to face disciplinary action for the hit.

“There’s no penalty,” he said after the game, according to the Chicago Tribune. “I think that hit happens 10 times a game.”

Toews has racked up 68 points this season and is arguably Chicago’s most important player. The Blackhawks have lost four of their last five games and are not playing their best hockey heading into the postseason. If Toews is forced to miss a significant amount of time, they could be in serious trouble in the first round.

Video: Jonathan Toews hit by Johnny Boychuk; status uncertain for Game 6

Jonathan Toews‘ status for Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Boston Bruins is uncertain after the Blackhawks center was beat in Game 5 to the point that he missed the third period because of injury.

Toews was quiet in the first three games of the Cup Finals, but he scored in the high-scoring Game 4 affair, and he assisted on two Patrick Kane goals before sitting out the third with an upper-body injury in Game 5.

The B’s play tough hockey, and they seemed to go especially hard on Toews. Zdeno Chara nailed the center twice with shots to the head (pictured), and Dennis Seidenberg also leveled him. But the hardest hit of all — the one many believe contributed most to Toews’ injury problems — was a nasty hit by Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk.

Boychuk said after the game that he doesn’t think he’ll be suspended because he believes his hit was clean.

“He was cutting to the net and I came across and read it and hit him,” Boychuk said, via NHL.com “Tried to hit him clean. I thought it was. I don’t know how he fell, awkwardly, or how he fell; but I’m going to try and play physical. He’s going to drive the net like he’s supposed to and I’m going to hit. … He was bending forward so (I) was just trying to stop him from going to the net.”

The Blackhawks are hopeful Toews will be ready for Game 6 on Monday.

“We’re hopeful he’ll be ready next game, upper-body,” Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said after the game. “We’ll see how he is tomorrow. I checked on him a couple times there. I think he wanted to play, but we’ll see.”

Here is video of Quenneville’s comments on Toews:

Pictures: Jonathan Toews’ Girlfriend Gabrielle Velasquez is Insanely Hot

I’m starting to get the feeling Jonathan Toews has the best everything. Two years ago, the Blackhawks captain had the best hockey team in the NHL.  This past season, he had by far the most intense “history will be made” commercial promoting the Stanley Cup Playoffs.  Now, it has come to the public’s attention that Toews could possibly have the hottest girlfriend in hockey.

More than half a year has passed since we added to Steve’s smokin’ hot sports girlfriends, but Gabrielle Velasquez has forced our hand.  If you believe in the higher powers shutting a door and opening a window, you can use Velasquez to fill the void left by Rory McIlroy’s girlfriend Holly Sweeney saying goodbye.  A Barstool Sports reader sent in some pictures of Velasquez after she and Toews were spotted enjoying a Cubs game over the weekend. We quickly decided they must be shared with the world.  Check out these pictures of Jonathan Toews girlfriend Gabrielle Velasquez, courtesy of Barstool:

Rate the New Jonathan Toews ‘History Will Be Made’ Stanley Cup Commerical (Video)

The NHL is certainly not the most popular sport in the U.S., but they aren’t going down without a fight. The “History Will Be Made” advertising campaign for the Stanley Cup that was launched last March may have inspired a parody or two, but if you ask me it’s getting the job done.  The newest edition of the campaign, which features Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews, is a home run.  Check out the Jonathan Toews “History Will Be Made” Stanley Cup commercial, as pointed out by The Big Lead:

If you don’t appreciate that commercial you either really, really, really hate hockey or you really, really, really, hate kids.  Forget about the fact that some of those little tykes grow up and drink themselves silly.  The Toews commercial has set the bar high, and I’m looking forward to seeing what else the NHL will come up with as we approach the postseason. Your move, Where Amazing Happens.

Jonathan Toews + Snooki = Awkward

Jonathan Toews has been getting around lately. He made an appearance on the Jay Leno Show, had an extremely awkward interview with Miley Cyrus, and now he had the, erm … honor of meeting Jersey Shore’sSnooki.

Toews did an after party interview for the MuchMusic Awards even after the Miley mishap, and it was actually going quite well. Captain Serious was joking around and seemed a little less tense than usual … then Snooki was brought onto the set. Check out this video of Jonathan Toews and Snooki that a friend just passed along to me:

First off, Toews, I really hope you burned that suit when you got home. I also hope you took multiple showers.  I would never let Snooki sit next to me let alone touch me. Was anyone else disgusted by her horrible attempt to hit on the captain? Yeah, me too.

And Snooki … the Mets are baseball. She just made a fool out of herself as usual. I mean you’re from Jersey and you don’t know who the New Jersey Devils are? And as for Toews, I really hope you aren’t subjected to anymore interviews with ditsy girls anymore. But if you want to give the females of the world one more shot, I’d be happy to interview you.

Jonathan Toews: Blackhawks Want Another Cup

Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews has enjoyed an amazing year to say the least. He won a gold medal in Vancouver with the Canadian hockey team, the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoffs MVP, and oh yeah, he brought the Stanley Cup back to Chicago for the first time in 49 years.  And things haven’t stopped there. Despite playing the sidekick to Miley Cyrus at the 2010 MuchMusic Awards, Toews still has a reason to smile — he’ll be the cover boy of NHL ’11. (Two Blackhawks in a row, Patrick Kane graced this year’s cover.)

Regardless of all the accomplishments this year, Toews is still not satisfied. In one of the captain’s rare radio appearances, he told Waddle & Silvy on ESPN 1000 that he has no interest in handing over the Cup next year:

“We may not have said that publicly, but amongst each other in the euphoria of winning and celebrating with fans around us, jokingly and seriously we’ve said let’s do this again, and we mean it. The feeling is incredible, but we realize once the puck drops next year it’s back to business, and you have to find a new champion. We don’t want it to be a new champion. We want it to be us again.”

It’s hard for me to refrain from saying “Hell yeah!”…so I won’t. Hell yeah! Of course any team that wins a championship doesn’t want to lose it the next year — that’s just common sense. What I am excited about is that the Blackhawks, amongst their celebrating, are serious about next season. It’s not an easy task to repeat a championship and I’m glad the boys are already getting down to business. After all, their season starts on Oct. 7th in Colorado and that’s only less than four months away. Opposing teams are never easy on the defending champs but something tells me the ‘Hawks can do it again.

Don’t Lose Miley’s Cue Cards

It’s a good thing Chicago Blackhawks center Jonathan Toews isn’t much of a social butterfly.  If he were, he might be a little put off by Miley Cyrus‘ inability to ad-lib.  The two were introducing a performance by rapper Drake at the 2010 MuchMusic Awards on Sunday night when Miley was supposedly unable to read her cue cards, as she reminded us multiple times.  Apparently giving an introduction for a musical performance is no easy task for the pop star without the cards, and as a result the Stanley Cup champ became more of an awkward decoration while she babbled and tried to recover.  Check out the video of Miley Cyrus messing up at the 2010 MuchMusic Awards alongside Jonathan Toews because she couldn’t read the cue cards, courtesy of Puck Daddy via SI Hot Clicks:

It’s okay, Miley, Cameron Maybin still loves you.
