Aaron Judge appears to have drawn a line between the MVP award and the Cy Young honor.
Following the New York Yankees’ 2-0 win against the New York Mets in a series finale on Sunday at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y., Judge was asked for his thoughts on the possibility of teammate and pitcher Cam Schlittler winning not just the American League Cy Young Award but also MVP.
“They’ve got a Cy Young Award for a reason,” Judge said, via YES Network. “Best pitcher in the game. He’s got my vote, definitely, for the Cy Young.”
The question was brought up after yet another sparkling performance on the mound by Schlittler.
In the win over the Mets, Schlittler pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just a hit and issuing two walks, while fanning a total of eight batters. He lowered his ERA to 1.95, the best in the big leagues through Sunday.
Some may view Judge’s take in a negative light, but he seems to be genuinely supportive of Schlittler, who is just 25 years old.
A pitcher winning the MVP and Cy Young is rare, and it has been a while since someone accomplished that feat.
Los Angeles Dodgers legend Clayton Kershaw was the last to do it in 2014 in the National League, while Justin Verlander earned the honor in 2011, when he was still with the Detroit Tigers.
