The Alex Bregman era for the Houston Astros has come to an end. A new one is about to begin with the Boston Red Sox.
On Wednesday, reports emerged that the Red Sox were signing Bregman to a 3-year contract worth $120 million. According to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome, Bregman has two opt-outs in his new deal, opening the door for him to test free agency once again in the seasons to come. The 30-year-old had also turned down a 6-year offer worth $170 million from another team.
There were rumblings of late that the Astros had fallen out of the running to sign Bregman. Astros GM Dana Brown had a telling comment earlier this month that signaled Bregman likely heading elsewhere.

The Red Sox were considered as one of “two co-favorites” for Bregman’s services over the last few weeks. Boston reportedly offered $10 million per year more than any other team.
There were rumblings of late that the Astros had fallen out of the running to sign Bregman. Astros GM Dana Brown had a telling comment earlier this month that signaled Bregman likely heading elsewhere. Sure enough, Bregman made the move after nine seasons with the team.
Bregman earned two All-Star nods and gave the Astros above-average third baseman throughout his decade-long run in Houston. The Albuquerque native had his best year in 2019 when he batted .296 with 41 home runs, 112 RBIs and had an OPS of 1.015. He finished second in AL MVP voting that season.
Since then, Bregman has yet to recapture his MVP-caliber form. But he’s remained an outstanding player at his position. His Wins Above Replacement (WAR) figure has been above 4.0 in each of his last three seasons.
In his final campaign with the Astros, Bregman hit .260 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs across 145 games.
