Angels owner hinting at big free agent signing this offseason?

The Los Angeles Angels just posted their worst season in two decades, but owner Arte Moreno may be hinting at some big things to come.

Speaking with reporters on Thursday, Moreno said that the team’s payroll would definitely be increasing this offseason, per Halo Hangout.

For what it’s worth, the Angels, who finished fourth in the American League West with a 72-90 record, had a $160 million payroll this past season. If they decline outfielder Kole Calhoun’s 2020 club option, that number can drop to roughly $120 million for the coming year, not factoring in arbitration salaries.

With a strong incoming free agent class featuring Anthony Rendon, Madison Bumgarner, Hyun-Jin Ryu, and other top talent, that kind of mindset from ownership should put the Angels in a position to dramatically improve their team. They may have their eye on one free agent in particular though.
