Anthony Volpe wins game for Yankees with amazing slide into home

Anthony Volpe sliding into home plate

Anthony Volpe finally managed to produce a highlight in the 2025 season, and it was an incredible one at that.

The New York Yankees shortstop Volpe won Thursday’s game against the Seattle Mariners with a breathtaking slide into home plate. During the bottom of the tenth inning at Yankee Stadium in New York, N.Y. with the score tied 5-5, Volpe was the ghost runner on second base for the Yankees.

Volpe made it to third after consecutive walks to teammates Paul Goldschmidt and Trent Grisham. Aaron Judge then followed with a somewhat shallow fly ball into center field, and Volpe decided to test the arm of Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez.

The throw from Rodriguez was on line and beat Volpe into the plate. However, the 24-year-old shortstop got around the tag from Mariners star catcher Cal Raleigh with a magnificent sideways slide to successfully score the game’s winning run.

Here is another angle that shows just how amazing Volpe’s slide around the tag from Raleigh (which missed him completely) was.

Volpe’s acrobatic moment completed a very unlikely comeback victory for the Yankees. They were trailing the Mariners 5-0 going into the bottom of the eighth inning and hadn’t even gotten a hit off Seattle starter Bryan Woo up until that point. But the Yankees got back-to-back hits off Woo to lead off the half-inning and ended up scoring one run off him, two runs off Matt Brash, two more runs off Andres Munoz, and the decisive run off Gabe Speier to win the game 6-5.

As for Volpe himself, he has performed poorly so far this season with a .215 batting average. Volpe has been making ugly defensive errors, and Volpe’s father recently even got profane with some hecklers insulting his play. But on Thursday night against the Mariners, Volpe redeemed himself in a major way with one of the best (not to mention the most clutch) slides that we have seen in quite some time.
