A Houston Astros franchise legend had some thoughts on Alex Bregman’s departure from the franchise.
Roy Oswalt, who spent parts of ten seasons with the Astros, bemoaned Bregman’s departure in a post on X Thursday. The former All-Star pitcher warned that the Astros will miss Bregman, who he described as a “fantastic” Astro.
“Bregman will be missed, he was fantastic Astro,” Oswalt wrote.
Bregman accepted a three-year deal with the Boston Red Sox worth $40 million per year to leave the Astros. He will also be taking on a new position in Boston.
The Astros were seemingly out on Bregman for much of the offseason, only to be linked to a renewed pursuit in recent weeks. By the time Bregman made the decision to join the Red Sox, however, the Astros appeared to be out of the mix once again, with the player’s financial demands simply being too much for them to accommodate.
Bregman leaves the Astros after eight playoff appearances in nine seasons with the team. He is a lifetime .272 hitter with 191 home runs. He was a two-time All-Star in Houston and finished as runner-up in AL MVP voting in 2019.
Oswalt’s comments probably sum up how the Astros as a whole feel about Bregman. He was viewed as a franchise cornerstone, and they are going to look a lot different without him.
