The Houston Astros appear to be done with former top prospect Jon Singleton.
Houston released Singleton on Monday. The 26-year-old has not played this season because he is serving a 100-game suspension for his third drug violation — all for marijuana.
Singleton became a top prospect after hitting well in the minors from 2010-2012. He did well enough in his first two pro seasons that he was a part of the package that went from Philly to Houston in the Hunter Pence trade.
Singleton saw action with the Astros in 2014 and 2015, but only batted .171 in 114 career MLB games. Though he still has shown great power, Singleton hasn’t hit above .205 in either of the last two seasons.
The Astros gave Singleton a $10 million contract in 2014, figuring that he would be a bargain if he produced. Instead, that appears to have been wasted money.
