Houston Astros pitcher Tatsuya Imai is on the injured list after just three starts, and the Japanese right-hander thinks moving to America has something to do with it.
Imai recorded just one out in his last start on Friday and was placed on the injured list with right arm fatigue. Through his interpreter, Shio Enomoto, Imai blamed trouble acclimating to his new lifestyle as a key reason for the injury.
“He’s not able to adjust to the American lifestyle,” Enomoto said, via Chandler Rome of The Athletic. “Baseball and outside of baseball. That’s probably the reason (for his arm fatigue).
“For example, the travel is different from Japan. The timing when the players eat. In Japan, when they get back to the hotel, they eat their dinner. Here, the players eat at the stadium. He thought it would be the same as in Japan, for example, eating dinner at the hotel. He thinks, even though he’s on the IL right now, he thinks it’s a positive thing to try and adjust and try to become better.”
Any pitcher moving to Major League Baseball from Japan has to deal with an adjustment process, but Imai’s appears rockier than most. He had not pitched all that great even before his arm trouble popped up, posting a 7.27 ERA over his first three starts.
The Astros signed Imai to a $54 million deal in the offseason, but there were apparently some doubts around the league about whether he would thrive at the MLB level. Those who weren’t sure about him are probably feeling quite vindicated now.
