Athletics want to retain manager Bob Melvin
Bob Melvin is one of MLB’s longest-tenured managers, and the Oakland Athletics want to keep him around a while longer.
Athletics vice president Billy Beane said Friday that he hopes to sort out a long-term deal with Melvin, whose contract expires at the end of the 2019 season.
Beane said he hopes Melvin is here a long time, so an extension could come soon. Melvin’s contract runs out after next season.

Melvin led his A’s to their fourth playoff appearance in his seven full seasons with the club, though they did fall short in the AL Wild-Card Game. Since taking over during the 2011 season, he’s 634-599 with Oakland, maintaining a winning record despite three consecutive last-place finishes. He’s never won a playoff series with the A’s, but they’re willing to forgive this.
Retaining Melvin should be pretty straightforward for Oakland. Keeping their core of talent in place, despite Beane’s wishes, will be a tougher job.
