Cam Schlittler has officially arrived on the national stage.
The New York Yankees starter Schlittler pitched the game of a lifetime on Thursday against the hated rival Boston Red Sox. Schlittler got the ball for the winner-take-all Game 3 of the AL Wild Card Series at Yankee Stadium in New York, N.Y. and proceeded to rise to the occasion (and then some).
Still just 24 years old, Schlittler blanked the Red Sox over eight shutout innings. He struck out 12 Boston batters, scattering five hits and not issuing a single walk over 107 pitches thrown as the Yankees went on to win by a 4-0 final score.

The absolute masterpiece from Schlittler had everyone on X saying the same thing — that he was somehow doing this as a rookie.

I don’t even know how to describe what we just witnessed with Cam Schlittler. This was a rookie pitching in an elimination game against the Boston Red Sox.

Schlittler, a seventh-round pick by the Yankees in 2022, began this season in Double-A and did not even make his big-league debut until July (after fellow pitcher Clarke Schmidt was lost for the year due to injury). On Thursday, he was making the very first playoff start of his MLB career … and responded by striking out the most batters in MLB playoff history during a winner-take-all game.
With the series victory, the Yankees will now advance to play the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS. It is clear that Schlittler will play a starring role for New York during the remainder of their playoff run, which is remarkable given that people couldn’t even get his name right a couple of months ago.
