Cardinals make big announcement about their front office

The St. Louis Cardinals are making big changes to their front office after a series of disappointing seasons.

The Cardinals announced Monday that longtime team president John Mozeliak will see out the final year of his contract in 2025 and then step aside. Top adviser Chaim Bloom, formerly the top executive with the Boston Red Sox, will then replace him.

John Mozeliak will see baseball operations through 2025, his final year in the role (and of his contract).

After next season, Bloom will take over as POBO.

He has signed a five-year contract.

This is a rather odd arrangement from the Cardinals, who seem ready to move on from Mozeliak but also seem unwilling to fire him ahead of the final year of his contract. He has been a member of the Cardinals’ organization since 1995, and has been the team’s general manager since October 2007. The Cardinals won the 2011 World Series on his watch, but never won another Fall Classic despite a series of competitive teams. Things regressed in recent years, and the team missed the playoffs in 2024 for the second straight year.

Bloom was hired by the Red Sox in 2019 with a mandate to remain competitive while cutting salary. He ultimately made the unpopular Mookie Betts trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and he was fired in 2023 amid some criticism of the team’s more conservative front office strategy.

There had been some speculation that the Cardinals could make other major changes after their disappointing 2024 season. For now, that does not appear to be coming.
