Daisuke Matsuzaka in trouble with Japanese team over round of golf

We have not heard a whole lot about Daisuke Matsuzaka since he last pitched for the New York Mets in 2014, but it sounds like he has found himself in a little hot water with the Japanese team he is playing for.

According to a report from Yahoo Japan, Matsuzaka recently faced disciplinary action from the Chunichi Dragons for playing golf on a day when team activities were scheduled. Matsuzaka, who is dealing with shoulder inflammation and currently rehabbing, apologized to the team and accepted the penalty.

“This is not good to play golf on the practice day. It is not prohibited on holiday golf, but it will not be on the practice day,” a Dragons representative said, via a Google translation.

Matsuzaka is a Japanese baseball legend who made a name for himself pitching for the Seibu Lions from 1999-2006. The Boston Red Sox paid a massive posting fee to sign him back in 2007, and he was expected to be one of the best pitchers in MLB. Instead, he fizzled out and posted a career record of 56-43 with a 4.45 ERA.

Ironically, the Red Sox know all about players making headlines for golfing when they probably shouldn’t have. It’s unclear exactly what penalty Matsuzaka faced, but it doesn’t sound all that serious.
