David Ortiz on Brandon Workman suspension: ‘I don’t think what they’re doing is fair’

Four days after the Red Sox and Rays had a dust-up over some players being hit, David Ortiz is still unhappy.

Based on the penalties handed down by MLB, he has a right to be.

David OrtizMLB announced Tuesday that they were fining Red Sox pitcher Brandon Workman and suspending him six games for throwing behind Evan Longoria during the sixth inning of last Friday’s Sox-Rays game. Workman throwing behind Longo came after Rays starter David Price hit Ortiz in the first and Mike Carp in the fourth, the latter of which sparked the benches to clear.

Ortiz doesn’t understand how Price avoided punishment.

“We’re the ones getting fines and suspensions,” Ortiz said via ESPN Boston. “I guess the rules aren’t for everyone.

“I don’t think what they’re doing is fair. I think the rules should be for everybody. We didn’t start this up. I didn’t hit nobody. Workman didn’t hit anybody in the first inning. [Price] did.”

We’re absolutely with Ortiz on this. It was pretty obvious to us that Price hit Ortiz intentionally in the first, but the umpires must not have seen it that way. Ortiz was fuming so much after the game that he said Price was acting like a “little girl” and “little b-tch.” The one-sided punishments are doing nothing to cool the issue in his mind. Maybe MLB will lessen the suspension after hearing Boston’s appeal.
