David Ortiz shares thoughts on anti-racist banner at Fenway Park
David Ortiz doesn’t feel that an MLB ballpark is any place for fans to make political statements using banners and signs — no matter what the message being displayed may be.
TMZ caught up with Ortiz on Thursday and filled him in about the banner that was hung from the Green Monster at Fenway Park the night before. There was initially some confusion over whether the message was one that was pro- or anti-racist, but none of that matters to Big Papi.
“I don’t like to put attention into any of that crap, you know what I’m saying? It is what it is,” Ortiz said. “You’ve gotta do the right thing to survive.”
The photographer was sure to clarify that the banner was speaking out against racism, but that didn’t change Ortiz’s opinion.
“People can get the wrong idea about those signs,” he added. “You don’t want to add more s— to the s— that is already out there. I wouldn’t do it myself, personally.”
The fans who displayed the banner were removed from Fenway Park due to a policy the Red Sox have about affixing objects to stadium structures. The five individuals responsible for the message later clarified their intentions, noting that they were inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement.
