Report: Derek Jeter plans to fire multiple Marlins special assistants
When new owners take over any business, they tend to do a fair amount of firings in order to staff the organization with the personnel of their choosing. It appears things won’t be much different for the Miami Marlins.
The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson reported on Friday that Derek Jeter’s prospective ownership group plans to fire multiple special assistants in the Marlins’ front office. Special assistants Tony Perez, Andre Dawson, Jeff Conine and Jack McKeon are all expected to lose jobs with the new ownership group. The four were holding roles as special assistants to either team owner Jeffrey Loria or team president David Samson.
Though the sale to Jeter’s ownership group hasn’t officially been approved yet by MLB, Jeter reportedly is so confident the deal will go through that he asked Samson to do the firing. As an odd twist, Samson has been informed he won’t be retained by the new ownership.
Perez has been the Marlins since 1993, Dawson played the final two seasons of his career with the team, Conine is known as “Mr. Marlin,” and McKeon was the manager for the team’s second World Series title.
Conine, Dawson and Perez all served as community ambassadors, helping players with coaching tips, among other assignments, per the Herald. McKeon has had different assignments, including scouting some of the minor league teams.
