It’s bad news for Oakland A’s prospect AJ Puk.
The Athletics announced on Tuesday that Dr. James Andrews, who offered a second opinion on Puk’s elbow, recommended the pitcher undergo Tommy John surgery.
Puk, a southpaw, was the No. 6 overall pick in the 2016 draft by the A’s out of Florida. He was shut down last week with biceps soreness. There was talk throughout the day on Tuesday about the condition of Puk’s elbow, with Fan Rag Sports’ Jon Heyman saying that Tommy John surgery was a possibility due to potential ligament damage.
Puk, a high-strikeouts, high-velocity pitcher, is 6-14 with a 3.82 ERA during his minor league career. He has 224 strikeouts in 157.2 innings.
