Like many New York Mets fans, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell was elated with Pete Alonso’s heroics on Thursday night. Mitchell’s father serves as an executive for the team, which has made Mitchell a huge fan of the NL East squad.
When Alonso came to the plate in the top of the ninth inning of Game 3 of the NL Wild Card series, Mitchell was seated for dinner at a nice restaurant. After Alonso slugged a go-ahead three-run home run that sailed over the outfield wall, the five-time NBA All-Star was on the floor.
“I was at dinner. I screamed. Fell out of my chair. The (people sitting nearby) in the restaurant thought there was a roach, the way I screamed,” Mitchell said, via David Aldridge of The Athletic.
Once he picked himself up off the floor and dusted himself off, Mitchell took to X to further express his excitement.

Mitchell Sr. has spent 20-plus years in the Mets organization, filling various roles. Growing up, Mitchell was frequently around the team, and he still attends games when time and travel permits. Back in June, the team welcomed him as a special guest during a Mets-Yankees game and even permitted him to take batting practice.
Mitchell hopes for more Mets magic beginning on Saturday afternoon when they take on the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 1 of the NLDS.
