During Saturday’s game between the Marlins and Mets, Giancarlo Stanton launched a monster home run that hit the scoreboard in left field at Marlins Park. Perhaps just as enjoyable as Stanton’s blast was the reaction by a former member of the Marlins.
Dontrelle Willis was on hand for the game as it was his bobblehead night at the stadium. While there for the festivities, Willis stopped by the broadcast booth and had a headset on when Stanton hit his home run. His reaction was great and sums up the moment perfectly.
During his career, Willis played with an infectious smile and happiness that were evident whether he was on the mound or in the batter’s box. Both were on display once again as he said “Momma, there go that man again!” while Stanton rounded the bases.
Willis spent his first five seasons in the big leagues with the Marlins, making the all-star team twice and winning the National League Rookie of the Year Award in 2003. His 22 wins in 2005 are the most in a single-season in franchise history. Willis’ 15 career complete games are also the most.
Here’s Willis and his bobblehead.
