The Boston Red Sox lost a key contributor in the first inning of their playoff series against the Houston Astros on Thursday.

DH Eduardo Nunez grounded out as the second batter of Game 1 of the ALDS. He began hobbling almost immediately after he broke out of the box and was clearly feeling something wrong in his leg. Nunez wasn’t even able to make it all the way to first and stopped running and went down to the ground.

Nunez was carried off the field and into the clubhouse.

Nunez has been dealing with a knee injury. He was on the DL in September with a strained ligament in his knee and aggravated it later in the month. He was playing with a brace on his right knee.

Nunez was acquired by the Red Sox from the Giants during the season and has been stellar in Boston. He batted .321 with 12 doubles and eight home runs, giving him an .892 OPS. Hanley Ramirez was expected to replace him as the DH.
