Fans stunned after Mariners OF given credit for hit on scoring change

Baseball fans were left stunned by a scoring change made after the New York Yankees’ 3-2 win over the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Wash., on Wednesday night.

Leody Taveras was leading off the bottom of the third inning for the Mariners in a scoreless game. He hit a routine groundball to second baseman DJ LeMahieu. First baseman Ben Rice initially went to try to field the ball, so he had to scramble back toward first base. Pitcher Will Warren also went to cover first, but he wasn’t sure if Rice would take the throw from LeMahieu. Neither player went for the throw, which hit Taveras, allowing him to reach base.

LeMahieu was initially charged with a throwing error on the play. However, the official scorer made a change after the game and gave Taveras a hit.

Postgame scoring change here in Seattle on that third inning play at 1B. Changed to a base hit, which is comically bad, so Warren charged with two earned runs now. It was initially a tough error on LeMahieu, who made a good throw to 1st, but in no way, shape or form that’s a hit

The logic behind the change is that LeMahieu’s throw was fine. The mistake was a mental one between Rice and Warren, who couldn’t decide who would take the throw. Baseball does not consider mental mistakes to be official scoring errors, which is why there was a change made.

Fans saw the routine groundball hit by Taveras and couldn’t believe he ended up being given a hit.

The hometown scorer must like our new acquisition. That’s nowhere near a hit. He’s out quite easily if the throw is on target.

What’s considered a hit versus an error in today’s game is so comical I can’t

The Mariners scored two runs later in the inning on a double by Julio Rodriguez to go up 2-0. At the time the ball from Taveras was considered an error, the two runs were unearned. But once the scoring change was made after the game, Warren was charged with two earned runs. Bad break for him.
