Alex Dickerson had a specific name he wanted on the back of his jersey for the upcoming “Players’ Weekend” across MLB. But he says the league would not allow it.
Players get to choose the nickname they want to appear on the back of their jerseys for Players’ Weekend rather than their standard last name. Dickerson wanted “Dick” to be on his jersey, but he says MLB would not allow it, so he ended up choosing “Grandpa” instead.
Alex Dickerson’s nickname for Players’ Weekend is Grandpa. He said that’s what he was called in high school after his surgery. He said he wanted the first four letters of his name, but MLB wouldn’t go for it. #sfgiants

“We tried every angle, and they weren’t having it for whatever reason even though it’s on the back of my jersey every day,” Dickerson said, via the San Francisco Chronicle.
What’s even stranger is that the same name was approved for Baltimore Orioles pitcher Richard Bleier.
Maybe MLB didn’t want any identity confusion between Dickerson and another player with a famous similar nickname.
Players’ Weekend will run Aug. 23-25.
