The San Francisco Giants kept their distance from Barry Bonds for years, but that has changed recently. Now the team is going to some significant lengths to ensure that Bonds is a part of their history forever.

Giants CEO Larry Baer revealed on 95.7 The Game on Wednesday that the team is planning to create a statue of Bonds at Oracle Park. Baer offered no details, but said “it’s coming.”

Is Barry Bonds getting a statue?

Bonds was kept at a distance by the Giants for a while following the end of his career due to the controversy surrounding his alleged steroid use. That faded, and his No. 25 was retired by the organization in 2018. Since then, he has appeared at a number of games, and has received a very warm reception from fans. He has even had an informal role around the organization in recent years.

Under normal circumstances, a Bonds statue would be a no-brainer. His 762 home runs remain the league record, and no one has surpassed his 73-home run season of 2001. However, many see those accomplishments as tainted, and the allegations have kept him out of the Hall of Fame.

The Giants, of course, can do whatever they want. They see Bonds as a legend, as do their fans. Based solely upon his accomplishments, a statue would be a fitting tribute.
